MFG 21 has started discussions with the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) about locating the proposed Center for Manufacturing on its expanded campus – putting it at the center of the region’s new science and technology quarter and at the intersection of Portland’s inner eastside transportation network. Our attention settled on the PEPCO building located on Southeast Water Avenue on the edge of OMSI’s north parking area.

Proposed by the Coalition, the center would focus on advanced research to support the manufacturing industry as well as workforce training.

MFG 21 Board member, Warren Rosenfeld of Calbag Metals agreed to chair the exploration committee. MFG 21’s long-time partner, Portland Development Commission, has agreed to help finance the technical evaluation of the 100-year old industrial building. IDC will provide the committee with engineering and architectural expertise. The committee will begin work in September with participants drawn from industry and institutional partners.

We are very pleased that Oregon State University will participate in the review.
